why is tenido sometimes with an accent on the nand sometimes without. The correct answer for this question was with an accent wheras another question using tenido was without. My collins dictionary says without.

Hola Colin

I think you may be confusing the verb tener (to have) with the verb teñir (to dye). We are using the meaning "to dye" in this question:

Nosotras hemos teñido el pelo a nuestra prima. 

We have dyed our cousin's hair.

HINT: Conjugate "teñir" in El pretérito Perfecto


What you see on top of the n is not the acute accent that we use in the vowels (for stress) - this is the letter "ñ",  that is written that way. You can read a bit about all letters of the Spanish alphabet here.
