grammar in Mi comida favorita

It says, Además, me encantaría que mis alumnos desarrollen....

I was thinking it would say instead, Además me encantaría que mis alumnos desarrollaran...

Maybe I am overgeneralizing a concept or rule that isn't used here?

Hola Mary

The natural sequence of tenses is, as you said, conditional (me gustaría que) followed by imperfect sujunctive (desarrollaran) - however this general rule is broken here and the present subjunctive was used in stead. The effect of this is to make it either more "probable" or "closer to the present time".
