English Translation

I'm confused by the English translation: (I didn't have any chewing gum in my pocket.) for No llevaba ningún chicle en el bosillo

Question: Why is this not "No tenía ningún ...?

The translation I remember of llevar from an earlier lesson is to take.

Am I wrong here? Please clarify.

Hola Pati

"Llevar" can also mean "to carry" [something on you], this is why we used it here meaning:

I wasn't carrying any chewing gum in my pocket ( = I didn't have )

You could of course say "No tenía ningún chicle en el bolsillo."

Un saludo

Inma
