En la discoteca había muchos chicos guapos.

En la discoteca había muchos chicos guapos. Shouldn't this be habían as "muchos chicos guapos" is plural?

When we say there is or there are we use hay [3rd person of verb haber] in the present tense and había for there were in the imperfect tense.

In Spanish, you use hay/había whether it is followed by one item or many, unlike in English.
