Hola Ama

That sentence could be linked to one or two of the meanings we explain in the lesson:

Sobrar: There is/are too many/much of something

To express that there is an excess of something

or also some connection to:

Sobrar: to be left over

When we want to express that something is left over, that something remains

So, to expand a bit on this I'd say that when you ask someone with ¿Te sobra.../ te sobran...? what we mean is "Do you have too many of .... and have spare ones?"

It is a bit implicit in the meaning of "sobrar" in this case.

Saludos

I would translate it as, "Do you have a pen left or have you given them all out?"  So it would fall into tje category "to be left over/to remain".
