Can I use tengo ganas de - directly with a noun without resorting to a verb? e.g. Tento ganas de/Estoy deseando un pastel de chocolate? Thank you.

¡Ah! Good question

You can use a noun straight after "tengo ganas de..." but not after "estoy deseando", so we can say:

Tengo ganas de pastel de chocolate.

Tengo ganas de comer pastel de chocolate.

Estoy deseando comer pastel de chocolate.

But this would be incorrect:

Estoy deseando pastel de chocolate.
