British vs American translation

Nos enfadamos por una tontería.We got angry at each other over (because of) a trifle.

I think trifle is British English. Can someone tell me what it means in American English?

"a trifle" means "a silly thing", something that is not even worth mentioning, something very trivial (una tontería).
