adónde with past perfect?

adónde with past perfect?

The lesson suggests that the use of adónde vs dónde is dependant on whether a verb of movement  follows.

However, in a Kwiziq question "Luis me dijo _______ había ido de vacaciones" we are only given the options donde or dónde. But 'ir' seems to suggest adónde (Luis told me to where he went).

So, is it that 'ir' is in past perfect here (and that the movement is finished) that 'adónde' is not a valid option in this case?

Hola Graeme,

for verbs that imply movement (e.g. ir) you can use both adónde and dónde, as explained at the beginning of this lesson. It is when the verb is static that you cannot use the versions with a- in front. So in this sentence from this other lesson you could use both "adónde" and "dónde":

Luis me dijo adónde/dónde había ido de vacaciones. (Luis told me where he had gone on holiday.)

If I change this sentence to a static verb like "estar", then you cannot use adónde:

Luis me dijo dónde había estado de vacaciones. (Luis told me where he had been on holiday.)

I hope this clarifies it.

A question from the future (grin)...

Why would we use an accent with "Luis me dijo dónde había estado de vacaciones." when this is neither an interrogative or exclamatory clause?  Thanks.
