Transhumance is an ancient livestock practice in Spain that consists of the seasonal transfer of livestock between winter and summer pastures. This tradition allows flocks to find better climatic and nutritional conditions depending on the time of year. It is mainly practised with sheep, but also with cows and horses in some regions. The most important transhumance routes in Spain are known as cañadas reales, historic paths protected by law. One of the most famous routes is the Cañada Real Leonesa, which connects the mountains of León with Extremadura. Transhumance has been key in the conservation of biodiversity, as it helps regenerate ecosystems. In addition, it prevents overexploitation of pastures and reduces the risk of forest fires. Although it was more common in the Middle Ages, transhumance is still practised by some livestock farmers today. This tradition is considered Intangible Cultural Heritage in Spain, recognizing its historical and ecological value.
