The first inhabitants of El Salvador were the Poqomam, Lenca and Pipil people. These settled in the country in the middle of the eleventh century. In 1522, a Spanish expedition landed on Isla Meanguera, and this Salvadoran territory was the first that the Spanish visited. In 1546, Carlos I of Spain granted San Salvador the title of city and centuries later, in 1821, El Salvador achieved independence after intense struggles.
