How confident do you feel giving and receiving advice in Spanish? In this week\u2019s bilingual reader, two people are looking for guidance, giving you the perfect chance to explore useful expressions for advice and recommendations<\/strong> in context.<\/p>\n

“Consejos vendo y para m\u00ed no tengo”<\/p>\n

\"expression<\/div>\n

Literally, it means “I sell advice and don\u2019t have any for myself”, but what we mean is something like:<\/p>\n

\u201cI give advice that I don\u2019t follow myself.\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019m good at advising others, but not myself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words and using a common saying in English:
\n“I talk the talk but don’t walk the walk.”<\/span><\/p>\n

We use it a lot in Spanish when someone tells other people what they should do, but doesn\u2019t apply the same advice to their own life.<\/p>\n

\nI give advice that I don\u2019t follow myself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s put it into context, imagine:<\/p>\n

*someone always talks about healthy habits but never exercises himself;
\n*a manager talks about work-life balance but sends emails at midnight.
\n*a person who tells everyone to relax but is always stressed.
\n*a politician talks about honesty but is involved in a scandal.<\/p>\n

In any of these situations, someone could say (in an ironic way…):<\/p>\n

“Ya, ya… consejos vendo y para m\u00ed no tengo.”<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
