Let\u2019s look at how they differ.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.25em;font-weight: bold\">\ud83d\uded2 Two Ways to Say the Price<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>When talking about how much something costs, you can use either <em>valer<\/em> or <em>costar<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Both verbs mean the same thing and are used interchangeably in everyday Spanish to express price.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Vale 4 euros.<\/em> \u2014 It\u2019s worth 4 euros.<\/li>\n<li><em>Cuesta 4 euros.<\/em> \u2014 It costs 4 euros.<\/li>\n<li><em>\u00bfCu\u00e1nto vale este libro?<\/em> \u2014 How much is this book?<\/li>\n<li><em>\u00bfCu\u00e1nto cuesta esta camisa?<\/em> \u2014 How much does this shirt cost?<\/li>\n<li><em>El caf\u00e9 vale dos euros.<\/em> \u2014 The coffee is two euros.<\/li>\n<li><em>El caf\u00e9 cuesta dos euros.<\/em> \u2014 The coffee costs two euros.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019ll hear both verbs used naturally across the Spanish-speaking world to talk about prices.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of money, <em>valer<\/em> can also express that something is <strong>worth the effort<\/strong> or <strong>worth it<\/strong>, as in <em>vale la pena<\/em> (\u201cit\u2019s worth it\u201d) or <em>ese chico vale mucho<\/em> (&#8220;that boy is really especial&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.25em;font-weight: bold\">\ud83d\udcd8 How These Verbs Work<\/span><\/p>\n<div>In the present tense, <strong><em>valer<\/em><\/strong> is regular while <strong><em>costar<\/em><\/strong> is a stem-changing verb (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/spanish.kwiziq.com\/revision\/glossary\/verb-conjugation-group\/verbos-con-cambio-vocalico-o-ue-en-el-presente\">o \u2192 ue<\/a><\/em>): <em>vale<\/em> \/ <em>valen<\/em> and <em>cuesta<\/em> \/ <em>cuestan<\/em>.<\/div>\n<p>\nBecause they describe the price of \u201cit\u201d or \u201cthey,\u201d both verbs are usually used in the <strong>third person<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>El libro cuesta mucho.<\/em> \u2014 The book costs a lot.<\/li>\n<li><em>Las entradas valen demasiado.<\/em> \u2014 The tickets are worth too much \/ are too expensive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.25em;font-weight: bold\">\ud83d\udcac How People Say \u201cOkay\u201d in Spanish<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0As you learn <em>valer<\/em> and <em>costar<\/em> you\u2019ll often hear another form, <strong><em>vale<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0in everyday conversations.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>It\u2019s short, friendly and extremely common in Spain. But be careful: one version that learners sometimes create, <strong><em>*es vale<\/em><\/strong>, is <strong>completely incorrect<\/strong> in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Spain<\/strong>, <em>vale<\/em> on its own means \u201cokay\u201d or \u201call right.\u201d It\u2019s one of those little words that make you sound instantly more natural:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Vale, nos vemos luego.<\/em> \u2014 Okay, see you later.<\/li>\n<li><em>Vale, perfecto.<\/em> \u2014 All right, perfect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Never say <em>*es vale<\/em> \u2014 it\u2019s grammatically wrong and doesn\u2019t exist in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>Think of <em>vale<\/em> as a complete expression by itself, just like saying \u201cokay!\u201d in English.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Latin America<\/strong>, however, <em>vale<\/em> isn\u2019t usually used this way. Speakers there have other short, natural ways to say \u201cokay\u201d or \u201cagreed,\u201d such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Est\u00e1 bien<\/em> \u2014 okay \/ that\u2019s fine<\/li>\n<li><em>De acuerdo<\/em> \u2014 agreed \/ okay<\/li>\n<li><em>Listo<\/em> \u2014 okay \/ got it<\/li>\n<li><em>Bueno<\/em> \u2014 okay (common in many countries)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So if you\u2019re in Madrid, <em>vale<\/em> will make you sound local.
